A web desktop or webtop is a desktop environment embedded in a web browser or similar client application. A webtop integrates web applications, web services, client-server applications, application servers, and applications on the local client into a desktop environment using the desktop metaphor. Web desktops provide an environment similar to that of Windows, Mac, or a graphical user interface on Unix and Linux systems. It is a virtual desktop running in a web browser. In a webtop the applications, data, files, configuration, settings, and access privileges reside remotely over the network. Much of the computing takes place remotely. The browser is primarily used for display and input purposes. The terms "web desktop" and "webtop" are distinct from web operating system, a network operating system such as TinyOS or distributed operating system such as Inferno. In popular use, web desktops are sometimes referred to incorrectly as web operating systems or simply WebOS.

Le terme webtop provient d'une contraction des termes web et desktop et désigne un bureau informatisé en ligne accessible via un navigateur internet. D'après Tim O'Reilly, Netscape serait à l'origine de ce concept enterré avec la mort de la société. Celui-ci renaît avec la vague dite "web 2.0" : de nombreuses applications sont portées sur le web dans le but de supplanter leurs équivalents classiques. L'enrichissement des interfaces (via les technologies AJAX, par exemple) permet en effet alors d'envisager de migrer ou reconcevoir des applications de bureautique sans changer les habitudes des utilisateurs : les actions de glisser-déplacer, le clic droit, les systèmes de complétion automatique sont implémentés dans les webmails (Gmail en particulier fut le précurseur du domaine), les sites d'information puis dans de nouveaux services en ligne. Parmi ces nouveaux services, on retrouve les composants de la bureautique habituelle transposés sur le web : traitement de texte, tableur, éditeur de schémas ou de présentation, messagerie instantanée, etc. Les exemples de Webtop incluent mais ne sont pas limités à OOS et eyeOS .
