Die singhalesische Schrift, in der die Singhalesische Sprache geschrieben wird, ist eine Abugida, die zu den südindischen Schriften gehört. Sie wird in Sri Lanka verwendet, ist abgeleitet von der Brahmi-Schrift und hat eine ununterbrochene Geschichte seit dem 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Die Formen der singhalesischen Schrift sind von der südindischen Grantha-Schrift beeinflusst. Ein Teil des singhalesischen Alphabets (Elu hodiya) wird nur für die Wörter der klassischen Sprache Elu verwendet. Dennoch sind diese Zeichen weiterhin im Alphabet enthalten und werden in der Schule gelehrt. Das vollständige Alphabet (Misra hodiya = gemischtes Alphabet) beinhaltet auch die Zeichen, die zur Schreibung von Lehnwörtern aus dem Sanskrit oder Pali nötig sind. Das sind hauptsächlich aspirierte Konsonanten, die dann aber meist nicht anders gelesen werden als die unaspirierten Konsonanten der singhalesischen Sprache. Für das lateinische f wurde extra ein neues Zeichen geschaffen. Wie bei allen indischen Schriften hat jede Silbe den inhärenten Vokal a (ka, kha, ga, …), der durch Zusatzeichen in andere Vokale abgeändert wird (ki, khi, ghi ...).

The core set, known as the śuddha siṃhala (Pure Sinhala, ශුද්ධ සිංහල) or eḷu hōḍiya, can represent all native phonemes. In order to render Sanskrit and Pali words, an extended set, the miśra siṃhala (Mixed Sinhala, මිශ්ර සිංහල), is available.

シンハラ文字（しんはらもじ）は主にシンハラ語を表記する文字で、ブラーフミー文字から派生した。ほとんどの文字が渦巻状になっており、他のブラーフミー系文字とUnicodeのデータが合わないほどである。 シンハラ文字の母音は二重母音も含めて14個あり、子音は32個ある。子音は有気音がほとんどを占める。子音字のみだと子音+[a]をあらわす。シンハラ語を書き表すだけなら子音字12、母音字20で十分であるが、サンスクリットからの外来語を多く取り入れたため今の文字数になった。
