abstract Relentless: the True Story of the Man Behind Rogers Communications is the autobiography of Edward Samuel Rogers II, son of plug-in wireless radio inventor Edward Samuel Rogers and better known as Ted Rogers, a Canadian business icon and pioneer in many electronic ventures from FM radio and cable television to wireless phones and high-speed Internet connections to the home. The book was co-written with Robert Brehl, a former journalist who is currently a speechwriter and corporate communications advisor with his own firm, abc2 Communications. Published by HarperCollins Canada, Relentless quickly became a Canadian best-seller after appearing in bookstores and online a mere 10 weeks before Ted Rogers’ death on Dec. 2, 2008. On April 7, 2009, Relentless was nominated for a National Business Book Award, alongside works by Margaret Atwood, Peter C. Newman and Kenneth Whyte. Ultimately, the 2009 award -- which was sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers and BMO Financial Group -- went to Globe and Mail business writer Gordon Pitts. The Ottawa Citizen called Relentless “a breezy account with most of Rogers’ warts on display and only a few punches pulled. ” The Globe and Mail called it chock full of “great anecdotes…vintage Ted Rogers. ” The Toronto Star called the book “passionate”, filled with life lessons shared with the reader. The updated paperback with tributes from many famous Canadians and an afterword by co-author Robert Brehl is scheduled to be released in September, 2009. G1
