Das Opernhaus Leipzig ist das städtische Opernhaus der Stadt Leipzig. Es steht in der Tradition von über 300 Jahren der Opernpflege in Leipzig und gilt somit als drittältestes öffentliches Opernhaus Europas. Zur Oper Leipzig gehören neben dem Ensemble der Opernchor, das Leipziger Ballett und die Musikalische Komödie mit eigener Spielstätte in Leipzig Lindenau. Kommissarischer Intendant ist Alexander von Maravic, Generalmusikdirektor der Oper ist ab der Spielzeit 2009/10 Ulf Schirmer. Seit der Spielzeit 2008/09 ist Peter Konwitschny Chefregisseur der Oper Leipzig.

La Ópera de Leipzig (en alemán Opernhaus Leipzig) es el teatro de ópera y ballet de la ciudad de Leipzig, Alemania. Ubicada en la plaza de Augusto, se inauguró el 8 de octubre de 1960 reemplazando al Neues Theater, destruido en 1944 durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Tiene capacidad para 1.426 espectadores y en su inauguración se interpretó "Los maestros cantores de Núremberg" de Richard Wagner. El nuevo teatro, construido por Kunz Nierade, fue en su momento el mas grande de la RDA. La compañía, fundada en 1693, es la segunda más antigua en Alemania y la tercera de Europa después de La Fenice y la de Hamburgo. Allí se estrenaron "Oberon" de Carl Maria von Weber, "El vampiro" de Marschner y "Genoveva" de Robert Schumann, entre otras. La orquesta que toca en las óperas es la célebre Gewandhaus, anteriormente dirigida por Arthur Nikisch y Gustav Mahler y en la actualidad liderada por Riccardo Chailly.

Oper Leipzig is an opera house and opera company in Leipzig, Germany. The Leipzig Opera traces its establishment to the year 1693, making it the third oldest opera venue in Europe after La Fenice (Venice, Italy) and the Hamburg State Opera (Hamburg, Germany). The Leipzig Opera does not have its own opera orchestra, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra performs as the orchestra for the opera. This relationship dates back to 1766, with performances of the Singspiel Die verwandelten Weiber, oder Der Teufel ist los by Johann Adam Hiller. The previous theater (the "Neues Theater") was inaugurated on January 28, 1868, with Jubilee Overture by Carl Maria von Weber and the overture for Iphigénie en Aulide by Gluck and Goethe's play Iphigenia in Tauris. From 1886 to 1888, Gustav Mahler was the second conductor; Arthur Nikisch was his superior. During an air raid in the night of December 3, 1943, the theater was destroyed, as were all Leipzig's theatres. Construction of the modern opera house began in 1956. The theatre was inaugurated on October 8, 1960, with a performance of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. In May 2008, the appointments of Alexander von Maravic as Artistic Director (Intendant) and Peter Konwitschny as principal director of productions at Leipzig Opera were announced.
