La costruzione di ontologie in informatica è un nuovo campo che studia tecniche e metodologie per costruire ontologie. Le ontologie sono state definite come una specifica esplicita di una concettualizzazione. Un'ontologia esprime, per un particolare dominio, l'insieme di termini, entità, oggetti, classi e le relazioni esistenti tra esse, fornendo inoltre definizioni formali e assiomi che ne vincolano l'intepretazione. La costruzione di ontologie riguarda il processo di sviluppo delle ontologie, il loro ciclo di vita, i metodi e le metodologie per la creazione di ontologie e gli strumenti e i linguaggi per supportarle.
