Nietzsche contra Wagner (o Nietzsche contro Wagner) è un saggio critico di Friedrich Nietzsche, scritto nel suo ultimo anno di lucidità (1888-1889). Fu pubblicato però solo nel 1895, ovvero sei anni dopo il suo collasso mentale. Nietzsche vi descrive il proprio allontanamento dal suo ex-amico ed ex-idolo Richard Wagner. Il filosofo tedesco conduce contro di lui un attacco, disapprovandone le scelte di vita, e principalmente la conversione al cristianesimo, interpretata come un segno di debolezza. Nietzsche apprezza la filosofia di Wagner su tonalità, musica e arte, ne ammira la potenza nel suscitare emozioni e nell'esprimere il proprio mondo interiore, nondimeno stigmatizza recisamente quelle che dal suo punto di vista considera le tare religiose del (pur grande) musicista. Ci sono almeno due ragioni per ritenere importante questo scritto. Innanzitutto, testimonia l'evoluzione dall'atteggiamento iniziale del giovane filosofo, quasi adorante al cospetto della grandiosa parabola esistenziale di Wagner — ad un'indagine più matura, del resto preceduta da una profonda disillusione. Altrettanto importante è il fatto che quest'opera può valere a confutare chi si ostini ad etichettare sbrigativamente il pensiero di Nietzsche sotto un'immeritata categoria di gretto antisemitismo, argomentando da questo lapidario giudizio:

Nietzsche contra Wagner is a critical essay by Friedrich Nietzsche, written in his last year of lucidity (1888-1889). It was not published until 1895, six years after Nietzsche's mental collapse. In it Nietzsche describes why he parted ways with his one-time idol and friend, Richard Wagner. Nietzsche attacks Wagner's views in this short work, expressing disappointment and frustration in Wagner's life choices (such as his conversion to Christianity, perceived as a sign of weakness). Nietzsche evaluates Wagner's philosophy on tonality, music and art; he admires Wagner's power to emote and express himself, but largely disdains what Nietzsche calls his religious biases. The work is significant for a number of reasons. It illustrates Nietzsche's evolution from a younger philosopher. It also gives the lie to those that would label Nietzsche as anti-Semitic, as is often alleged, and instead makes clear Nietzche's opposition to such ideas: "[Wagner] had condescended step by step to everything I despise — even to anti-Semitism."
