Harry "Breaker" Morant (9 décembre 1864 - 27 février 1902) était un bouvier Anglo-Australien, mais aussi un poète, un cavalier et un soldat dont les compétences renommées en matière équestre lui ont valu le surnom de "Breaker". Eloquent et cultivé, il était également un poète publié et devint également un des "bardes" les plus connus des années 1890, le volume de ses oeuvres paraissant dans le magazine The Bulletin. Au cours de son service dans la Seconde Guerre des Boers, Morant a été rendu responsable de l'exécution sommaire de plusieurs prisonniers Boers et d'un missionnaire allemand, Daniel Heese, qui avait été témoin de ses exactions. Ces actions l'ont conduit à un procès controversé en Cour Martiale pour meurtre, son ordre d'exécution ayant été signé par le Commandant d'Afrique du Sud lui-même, Lord Kitchener, bien que celui-ci ait nié l'émission d'un tel document. Morant a été exécuté par un contingent des Cameron Highlanders (un régiment de l'Armée Britannique) dans les geôles de Prétoria (Afrique du Sud) le 27 Février 1902). Harry 'Breaker' Harbord Morant (9 December 1864 – 27 February 1902) was an Anglo-Australian drover, horseman, poet, and soldier whose renowned skill with horses earned him the nickname "The Breaker. " Articulate, intelligent, and well-educated, he was also a published poet and became one of the better-known "back-block bards" of the 1890s, with the bulk of his work appearing in The Bulletin magazine. During service in the Second Boer War, Morant participated in the summary execution of several Boer prisoners and a German missionary, Daniel Heese, who had been a witness to the shootings. His actions led to his controversial court-martial for murder; his death warrant was personally signed by the British commander in South Africa, Lord Kitchener, although Lord Kitchener subsequently denied the issuance of it. Morant was executed for murder by a contingent of Cameron Highlanders (a regiment of the British Army) in Pretoria gaol on 27 February 1902. In the century since his death, Morant has become a folk hero in Australia. His story has been the subject of several books and a major Australian feature film. Even during his lifetime, there was a great deal of conflicting information about this romantic but elusive figure, much of what we 'think' we know about him relies on what he, himself, told people - thus many of the stories about him are undoubtedly apocryphal.

Während des Burenkrieges, an dem Morant auf Seiten der Briten teilnahm, erteilte er den Befehl, mehrere Kriegsgefangene hinzurichten, womit er sich eine kontrovers diskutierte Anklage vor einem Militärgericht einhandelte. Er wurde schuldig gesprochen, zum Tode verurteilt und am 27. Februar 1902 hingerichtet. Die Genehmigung zur Hinrichtung wurde von Lord Kitchener, dem britischen Oberbefehlshaber in Südafrika, persönlich unterzeichnet. Nach seinem Tode wurde Morant in Australien zum Volkshelden. Seine Geschichte wurde in mehreren Büchern behandelt und 1979 wurde sein Leben von dem Regisseur Bruce Beresford in dem Werk Breaker Morant verfilmt. Noch zu seinen Lebzeiten waren Gerüchte über ihn im Umlauf, von denen viele sich bis heute gehalten haben.
