Bosnian Americans are citizens of the United States whose ancestry can be traced to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The vast majority of Bosnian Americans emigrated to the United States during and after the Bosnian war, though a large number of Bosnians emigrated as early as the 19th century. It is worth noting that the majority consist of Bosniaks and that those of Serb and Croat ethnicity mostly choose to self identify as Serbian Americans or Croatian Americans. As a result the number of Bosnian Americans may actually be much higher than reported by the census.
