56th BAFTA Awards February 23, 2003 Best Film: The Pianist Best British Film: The Warrior The 56th British Film Awards, given by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts on 23 February, 2003, honored the best in film for 2002. Roman Polanski's The Pianist won the award for Best Film and Best Director. The Warrior, directed by Bertrand Faivre, was voted Best British Film of 2002. Nicole Kidman won the award for Best Lead Actress in The Hours. She would go on to win the Academy Award. The same happened to Catherine Zeta-Jones as Best Supporting Actress. Daniel Day-Lewis won the award for Best Male Performer in a Leading Role in Gangs of New York.
